PEDESTRIA
AN AUTOLESS CITY
A book dedicated to the creation of a brand new city designed to function without automobiles.
Includes two large format maps showing an overall view of Pedestria plus details.
Book and maps are available FREE for reading online or downloading to your computer in either Metric or English unit versions.
Pedestria is…
a city designed specifically without the mass use of the private automobile. It is:
• Autoless (but not vehicleless) – A carfree urban development, designed specifically without the mass use of the private automobile.
• Transit, pedestrian, and bicycle oriented – Pedestria is designed with public mass transit as the primary means of travel. Walking and bicycling are also incorporated into the city’s infrastructure.
• Environmentally benign – With the absence of the automobile and much of its accompanying
infrastructure, Pedestria is inherently less polluting, more resource sustainable and close to carbon
neutral.
• Compact and consolidated – Pedestria is a brand new city designed from scratch. The absence of the car and its large space requirements, allows Pedestria to be much more compact. With strong mixed use
zoning and density requirements, urban entities can be stacked more and consolidated.
• Modern and technologically advanced – Being a brand new planned community, Pedestria will benefit from all manner of modern technology.
• Affordable – With the absence of the automobile and its associated expenses, Pedestria will be a far
more economical city to live in, compared to car dominated cities.
• Energy efficient, green, healthy and sustainable – Once again, because of the absence of automobiles and their infrastructures, plus the incorporation of renewable energy sources, Pedestria will be extremely energy efficient and resource neutral (sustainable). With little or no pollution, large quantities of open space, community gardens and the inherent need to walk at least short distances by the general populace, Pedestria will be an extremely healthy environment and a low impact human scale
development.
• Finite – Pedestria is designed intentionally to be a finite city, limited in both its physical size (area) and
its total population.
• Reproductive – Pedestria, through its city charter and incorporation statutes is empowered with the
legal, financial and personnel resources to limit its growth (finite) and direct excess growth into a new
autoless city development.
• Hypothetical design – Pedestria is a hypothetical design which illustrates the unique nature of how an
autoless city could be arranged and developed.

What are the advantages of an autoless city?
• An autoless city can help fight climate change.
An autoless city reduces air pollution, carbon emissions, and automobile crashes. Air pollution is the fourth-leading cause of death worldwide, killing 4.2 million people globally every year.
• An autoless city is pedestrian-friendly.
A typical autoless city would feature a compact and walkable urban area marked by high
density of housing, shops and offices located close together. Residents would have but a
short journey from home to work and to local services.
• An autoless city is energy-efficient, green, healthy and sustainable.
An autoless city creates a hight quality of life by reducing noise and pollution and creating greater freedom for pedestrians and
cyclists. Fewer roads mean more room for parks, public squares and community life.

MEET DOUG WINDES, AUTHOR OF PEDESTRIA
Doug Windes has worked in the transportation field most of his career, working for the City of Portland, Oregon, USA — a city respected world-wide for its commitment to public transit and alternative means of travel. He was in the Transportation Engineering Department for 30 years as a draftsman and also worked in various other capacities.
As a life long student of the urban condition and as an occasional world traveler, Doug has witnessed first hand the enormous impact the automobile has had on the urban fabric. He views the creation of the autoless city as vital to the improvement of our human evolution into the future.
